FreeCook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison to host free in-person Environmental Resource Fair
Fair will feature family-friendly activities aimed at helping people make their communities greener, cleaner, and more sustainable
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Aug, 16, 2024 – Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison (District 15) will host a free in-person Environmental Resource Fair on Saturday, Aug. 24th, from noon to 2 p.m. to help Cook County residents learn how to protect the environment. The fair will be held at Rahlfs Woods (1350 S Park Ave, Streamwood, IL 60107) and feature a wide variety of family-friendly events and activities.
Each co-sponsor will have a table set up with information and activities. The fair is co-sponsored by Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Eira Corral Sepúlveda, Poplar Creek Library District, Streamwood Park District, Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability, Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency, Ride Illinois, the Citizens Utility Board, the Chicago Botanic Garden, Pace, Schaumburg Monarch Initiative, and the Village of Streamwood.
The fair will be held inside the Poplar Creek Library if there is inclement weather. Prospective attendees can register for the event at: https://bit.ly/envresfair2024.
Events and activities will include:
- MWRD: Providing tree saplings, milkweed and native plants seeds, and ways to keep our waterways clean.
- Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability: handing out bamboo straws and reusable cutlery and bringing a variety of brochures on electric vehicles, utility savings programs, and more.
- Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) on Wheels: Bring hard to recycle items like electronics, clothing (clean and good condition), small appliances, Styrofoam, and more. Review all that is accepted: https://www.cookcountyil.gov/CHaRMCenter.
- Citizens Utility Board: providing information on ComEd billing, Energy Efficiency Programs, Solar Programs, Alternative Suppliers, and general energy saving along with fun giveaways.
- Nicor Gas: will provide community and bill assistance resources, free water-saving kits, and information on free home assessments and energy-efficiency rebates.
- Poplar Creek Public Library: will have a suggested reading list and fun giveaways.
- Ride Ilinois: promoting bike safety, everyday trips by bike, and the many benefits of riding a bike along with fun giveaways.
- Streamwood Park District: will be passing out wildflower seed packets.
- Schaumburg Monarch Initiative: learn how to support Monarch Butterflies.
- Pace: promoting their Fixed Route Service, ADA Paratransit Services, as well as Career Opportunities.
- Chicago Botanic Garden: providing information on their Budburst program to ID plants via an app you can download.
- My office will be helping distribute native plant seeds along with “How to Draw a Bird” pamphlets/instructions, and Chicago wilderness species of concern templates to color.
